Why Godot?
Godot is a free and open-source game engine that is beginner-friendly while still being powerful enough for professional games.
For a software engineering student, Godot is a great way to learn:
- Programming through game development
- Event-driven systems
- State management
- Physics and simulation
- UI development
- Project architecture
Recommended Version
Use:
Godot 4.x (Regular Version, not .NET)
Choose the .NET version only if you specifically want to write games in C#.
For most beginners:
- Use GDScript
- Follow the majority of tutorials
- Avoid unnecessary setup complexity
Core Concepts You Must Learn
1. Nodes
Everything in Godot is a Node.
Examples:
- Player
- Camera
- Enemy
- Button
- Audio Player
Think:
React -> Components
Godot -> Nodes
2. Scenes
Scenes are reusable collections of nodes.
Examples:
- Player Scene
- Enemy Scene
- Bullet Scene
- Main Menu Scene
Scenes are the building blocks of every game.
3. Signals
Signals are Godot's event system.
Examples:
- Button pressed
- Player died
- Enemy hit
- Animation finished
Web analogy:
button.addEventListener("click", handler)
Very similar concept.
4. GDScript
Godot's primary language.
Example:
extends CharacterBody2D
func _ready():
print("Hello World")
Looks similar to Python and is easy to learn.
5. Physics
Learn:
- CharacterBody2D
- move_and_slide()
- Collisions
- Collision Layers
- Collision Masks
Most beginner games depend on these.
6. Instancing
Used to create objects dynamically.
Examples:
- Spawn enemies
- Spawn bullets
- Spawn effects
This concept appears in almost every game.

Avoid These Beginner Traps
Do NOT start with:
- MMORPG
- GTA Clone
- Minecraft Clone
- Open World RPG
- Battle Royale
These projects are far too large.
Finish small projects first.
